Hi Maxine:

Thanks for the comment!

Sorry - I was only able to see the first of the three movies sent here in the US. I've been hoping to catch a rerun but haven't so far. I thought the first one was really great. From what you're saying, maybe I haven't missed out on anything very worthwhile after all (and generally I prefer books to movies, and don't "watch" too much of anything).

As to Mankell's level of control, that's something I don't know anything about.

[...] Peter also reports that a new Wallander is soon to appear in 2009, Den Orolige Mannen (The Worried Man) which he describes thus: A winter day in Sweden in 2008, a retired officer from the Swedish Navy, Håkan von Enke, disappears during his daily walk in the Lilljan forest. For Kurt Wallander this is a very personal affair – von Enke is the father in law of his daughter Linda and the grandfather of her little daughter. [...]

Thanks for this news, I am looking forward to this one. I finally saw one of the Swedish-language Wallender TV programmes, the second - Mastermind. I thought the first part much better than the English-language (Branagh) versions but I truly hated the mysogeny and "female torture porn" of the last part. It was so awful that I seriously doubt I will watch more of the series. I wonder if Mankell wrote it or had any creative control over that part? The plot was sacrificed for these gruesome aspects, a real disaster in my view.
